A break-in
I said:
Some people believe that unfortunate things happen
to those who have committed great sins.
God pays his debts without money,
goes the saying.
By the same token, therefore, I said,
I must have done something very good
to be rewarded with such joy
as I am experiencing here,
with you, at this moment.
But I do not believe God rewards and punishes in this way.
Actions have consequences, of course.
When I got home
to find my home burgled
my first thought was I was paying for our time together.
What nonsense.
Blame my failure to take out insurance.
The Council's failure to install the protective grille on the front door I had asked for.
My leaving the flat empty for the weekend.
But I will thank God for leaving me my guitar.
