Forget the Ten Commandments
There are Ten Commandments in the Old Testament, but Jesus boiled them down to two.
He said we should love God. And we should love one another. He said these two Commandments were like each other, which makes them one.
One Commandment. So simple, but so hard to do.
All of us bear resentments against other people. We may try to love them, but we fail. We ask God to forgive us our sins, as long as we forgive those who sin against us, but we can't do it. Do we realise what we are saying? We condemn ourselves out of our own mouths every time we pray that prayer.
Yet here, as in all things, Jesus will help us, if we only ask.
He said that if we love him, we will obey his Commandments. Notice the order. First: we love him. Then: we obey.
We try to hide our resentments from him, because we are secretly ashamed of them, but he knows everything there is to know about us. He named us even before we were conceived.
But we need to confess them to him, if he is going to do anything about them. Because we can't do it on our own.
