Naked among wolves

a true story
Let me tell you of a story
Of a gallant band of men.
Their home it was a prison camp
For nine long years or ten.
They were penned in there like cattle
And taken out to die
And when they begged for mercy no one heard their cry.
They were
Naked, naked,
Naked among the wolves.

Into the concentration camp
Upon one bitter day
There came a Polish prisoner
Upon his weary way.
His limbs were weak and skinny,
His eyes were dark and wild.
In his hand he held a suitcase,
And in that case a child.
It was
Naked, naked,
Naked among the wolves.

When the prisoners discovered it
They scarce believed their eyes.
The fascists would be merciless
If they ever found this prize.
Some said it was impossible,
But others answered No:
This child must be protected
From the fury of the foe.
It was
Naked, naked,
Naked among the wolves.

They hid it from the SS men
And kept it safe from harm.
They fed it stolen milk and food
And made it snug and warm.
But someone told the fascists
And the order went around:
This Jewish baby must be killed!
The baby must be found.
It was
Naked, naked,
Naked among the wolves.

Two men who knew about the child
Were taken by ill-luck.
They were thrown into the bunker
To be tortured till they broke.
They were dragged up to the gates of death
In torment every day:
Although they screamed they never
Gave the hiding place away.
They were
Naked, naked,
Naked among the wolves.

Now the Allies and the Russians
Had the Nazis on the run
And all were fighting for the day
When victory would be won.
The prisoners trained in secret
And prepared themselves to break
The chains that held them subject
To brutality and hate.
No more
Naked, naked,
Naked among the wolves.

That baby was too young to know
About the men who died
To save it from the rabid wolves
Mad howling for its hide.
Today it lives, today it breathes,
And millions round the world
Tell the tale of its protectors,
The men of Buchenwald.
They were
Naked, naked,
Naked among the wolves.
